CODELCO, Chile Programs Its Copper-Smelting Operations
نویسندگان
چکیده
CODELCO’s Chuquicamata Copper Smelter, located in Chile, must meet an environmental standard established in 2002 that limits the sulfur emissions from the copper-production process. This regulation placed new restrictions on the production process, and consequently the heuristic criteria based on years of operator experience no longer resulted in high production levels. We developed a model to maximize production while respecting metallurgic, operational, environmental, and other restrictions. We created two methods of planning daily activities for the plant. We developed a client-server tool that displays optimization results graphically and numerically based on data on operational conditions recorded in real time and data input manually. The smelter has used the system since March 2003. We found an increase in the quantity of copper concentrate processed of 25.4 percent.

The primary objectives of my funded research were two fold in construct and dealt with systems of management on both an industrial and individual level. The first was to examine the environmental and socio-economic burdens of resource management in relation to copper ore extraction in Chile, the world’s largest copper producer. Secondly, I visited a unique detoxification program at the Thamkrab...
متن کاملHydrology and Erosion Impacts of Mining Derived Coastal Sand Dunes,
Chile has an economy strongly based on the exploitation of its natural resources. Copper mining represents the main export monetary income, employing thousands of people all along the country. The Chilean Copper Corporation (CODELCO), El Salvador branch, has been the primary mining company, but it will be ending most of its activities by 201 1 unless copper prices stay at their record levels. B...
متن کاملCopper Bioleaching in Chile
Chile has a great tradition of producing and exporting copper. Over the last several decades, it has become the first producer on an international level. Its copper reserves are also the most important on the planet. However, after years of mineral exploitation, the ease of extracting copper oxides and ore copper content has diminished. To keep the production level high, the introduction of new...
متن کاملEffect of grinding time on flotation recovery of copper smelting slags in Bardaskan district
Copper smelting slags are hard materials. Therefore,to recover their copper by flotation method, grinding should be carried out to obtain optimal particle size. Copper smelting slags in the Bardeskan district, with work index of 16.24 kwh/st, were grinded for 65 minutes to reach an acceptable degree of freedom for the flotation tests, with particle size of 80%, smaller than 70 μm. With this gri...
متن کامل2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Arsenic in the United States
Arsenic is widely distributed in the Earth's crust, which contains ~3.4 ppm arsenic. In nature, arsenic is mostly found in minerals and only to a small extent in its elemental form. Arsenic is mainly obtained as a byproduct of the smelting of copper, lead, cobalt, and gold ores. Arsenic trioxide is the primary form in which arsenic is marketed and consumed. There has been no domestic production...
